Big Update for Drivers: Google Gemini Assistant Now Arriving in Cars

After months of anticipation, Google has finally started rolling out its advanced AI assistant Gemini inside Android Auto – though only to a limited group of users for now.

Gemini is replacing Google Assistant in select vehicles, acting as a smarter, more conversational AI companion designed to help drivers on the road. Google’s bigger goal is to bring its chat-based AI to as many devices as possible, and cars are now part of that plan.

Gemini Appearing in Early Android Auto Updates

Users have reported that Gemini is showing up in Android Auto versions 15.6 and 15.7, but this rollout is currently restricted to beta testers only. Those who received the update say they’re now seeing new Gemini-related settings, including options to allow accurate location sharing with the AI assistant.

Once the rollout is complete, Gemini will become the default voice assistant for both Android Auto and cars that come with Google Built-in. Google says it wants Gemini to act as a more intelligent, natural, and context-aware driving partner.

A Smarter, More Natural AI for Drivers

Bringing Gemini into cars is meant to reshape how drivers interact with voice assistants. Instead of short, simple commands, the AI will offer more natural and context-based conversations.

Gemini can:

  • Translate in over 40 languages
  • Understand driver habits and preferences
  • Keep track of context in ongoing conversations
  • Deliver information in a more human-like tone

With Gemini, drivers will be able to access Google Maps, YouTube Music, Spotify, restaurant reviews, place summaries, Gmail details, calendar updates, and more – all without touching their phone.

Introducing “Gemini Live” for Cars

This update also includes a new feature called Gemini Live.

Drivers can simply say:
“Hey Google, let’s talk.”

This launches a two-way, more conversational experience.
However, unlike the mobile version, the car version is intentionally more brief and concise, ensuring the driver stays focused on the road.

What Can Gemini Do Inside the Car?

Gemini performs all the tasks Google Assistant already handled, such as:

  • Sending messages
  • Playing music
  • Controlling navigation
  • Answering questions

But the key difference is how it communicates. The speech is smoother, more natural, and more human-like, giving drivers a better interaction experience.

What’s Next for Gemini in Cars?

Google says that more than 250 million vehicles worldwide now support Android Auto. Because of that massive reach, adding Gemini is one of Google’s largest AI expansions so far.

Right now, only selected beta users can access it. But based on Google’s roadmap, the company plans to collect early feedback and then roll it out globally in the coming weeks.

Once fully launched, Gemini is expected to become a central part of the in-car digital experience.
