Brace for More Storms: Heavy Rain Thunderstorms and Flood Alerts Issued Across Pakistan This Week

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast another intense spell of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and flash flooding in multiple regions of the country starting August 4, continuing through August 7, with weather conditions expected to worsen as a westerly wave strengthens on August 5.

According to the Met Office, weak monsoon currents are already affecting the upper and central parts of Pakistan and are likely to intensify in the coming days.

Citizens across various provinces are advised to stay alert as multiple weather hazards are expected, especially in hilly and urban flood-prone areas.

Regional Weather Forecast (4th–7th August)

Kashmir & Gilgit-Baltistan

  • Rain-wind/thunderstorms with isolated heavy rainfall are likely in:

    • Kashmir: Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, Mirpur (Aug 4–7).

    • Gilgit-Baltistan: Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, Shigar (Aug 5–7).

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)

  • Widespread rain-wind/thunderstorms with isolated heavy falls expected in:

    • Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Buner, Malakand, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, Kohat, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, Hangu, Karak, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Waziristan, Tank, and D.I. Khan (Aug 4–7).

Punjab & Islamabad

  • Scattered heavy rainfall with thunderstorms expected in:

    • Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Sahiwal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Khushab, Sargodha, Mianwali, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot, Faisalabad, and Kasur (Aug 4–7).

    • Light to moderate rain also likely in D.G. Khan, Bhakkar, Layyah, Multan, and Bahawalpur on August 6.

Balochistan

  • Hot and humid weather expected across most of the province.

  • Rain-wind/thunderstorms forecast for northeastern and southern districts including:

    • Barkhan, Musakhel, Loralai, Sibbi, Zhob, Qilla Saifullah, and Khuzdar on August 6.

Sindh

  • Most parts of the province to experience hot and humid conditions.

  • Light rain or drizzle expected in coastal areas throughout the week.

Advisory: Flooding, Landslides & Structural Hazards Possible

The Met Office has issued multiple warnings for potential impacts due to heavy rainfall:

  • Flash Flooding in streams and nullahs of Chitral, Swat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Buner, Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Kashmir from August 5 to 7.

  • Urban Flooding is possible in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, and Sialkot.

  • Landslides/mudslides may disrupt transportation and cause road blockages in hilly areas of KP, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, and Kashmir.

  • Windstorms and lightning could damage vulnerable structures like Kacha houses, billboards, electric poles, solar panels, and vehicles.

Public Advisory

The PMD has urged travelers, tourists, and the general public to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel to flood-prone or hilly areas during the forecast period.

  • Stay indoors during intense rainfall or lightning.

  • Remain updated with local weather alerts and advisories.

  • Take precautionary measures to secure property, especially rooftops and outdoor installations.
