E-Taxis Coming to Punjab in August—Scheme Details Revealed
Punjab to Launch E-Taxi Scheme in August — 30 Electric Taxis Reserved for Women
In a major step toward eco-friendly public transport and women’s empowerment, the Punjab government is set to roll out its much-anticipated e-taxi scheme in August. With all necessary groundwork nearly complete, the initiative is being hailed as a transformative move for the province’s transportation landscape.
Women-Focused Inclusion and Green Mobility
As part of the pilot project, 30 electric taxis will be exclusively allocated for women, aimed at promoting their participation in the transport sector—a space traditionally dominated by men. The effort marks a notable push toward gender inclusivity in public mobility.
Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan confirmed the development, adding that the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) is working on an online application portal to streamline the registration process for participants.
Easy, Interest-Free Installments for E-Taxi Owners
To make ownership accessible, the government has shortlisted nine companies to supply the electric taxis, which will be offered on easy, interest-free installment plans. This financial model is designed to lower entry barriers for fleet owners and individuals alike.
Full Rollout Within Two Weeks
According to the transport minister, the formal rollout of the scheme is expected to begin within the next two weeks. A comprehensive business and financial model has already been prepared to support smooth implementation and ensure sustainability.
1,100 E-Taxis in Pilot Phase
In its initial phase, the scheme will see 1,100 e-taxis distributed across the province. These will be allocated among:
-
Fleet owners (1,000 vehicles; minimum 10 vehicles per owner)
-
Individual drivers (70 vehicles)
-
Female drivers (30 vehicles reserved)
To support this deployment, selected suppliers will also be responsible for establishing service centers, spare parts supply facilities, and charging infrastructure throughout Punjab.
Government to Bear Key Costs
Official documents indicate that the Punjab government will cover the markup, registration fees, and token taxes for the vehicles—making the scheme financially viable for participants and ensuring broad-based adoption.
The e-taxi initiative underscores Punjab’s dual focus on sustainable urban development and social inclusion, setting a benchmark for other provinces to follow.
