New Vehicle Rule Coming to Punjab

New Vehicle Rule Coming to Punjab — Plates to Be Linked to Owners, Not Cars

In a major move toward modernization, the Punjab Excise and Taxation Department is expected to introduce a new vehicle registration system, aligning with recent developments in Islamabad and inspired by U.S. practices. The change is aimed at improving road security and streamlining vehicle ownership tracking across the province.

Shift from Vehicle-Based to Owner-Based Number Plates

The existing vehicle registration process in Punjab links number plates directly to the vehicle itself. However, under the upcoming system, number plates will be assigned to the registered owner, not the vehicle. This means the plate will remain with the individual, even if the vehicle is sold or transferred.

The initiative mirrors recent changes announced by Islamabad’s Excise and Taxation Department, which is already preparing to roll out the same U.S.-style registration model. Punjab’s adoption of the new system reflects growing efforts nationwide to enhance digital governance and vehicle traceability.

New Rules for Selling and Purchasing Vehicles

Once implemented, the updated system will require vehicle sellers to retain their original number plates. Buyers, in turn, must apply for a new number plate or opt for a customized plate registered under their own name. This shift is expected to prevent the misuse of number plates and create a more transparent vehicle ownership record.

Excise officials believe the changes will lead to stronger identity verification and tighter control over vehicle-related crimes. By linking plates directly to individual identities, authorities aim to improve enforcement measures and reduce fraudulent transactions.

While no official rollout date has been confirmed, sources indicate that preparations are underway and regulatory adjustments may be announced soon. The public is advised to stay updated through official government channels.
