Oman Passport Soars in Global Rankings as Visa-Free Access Expands to 88 Countries

Oman’s passport has made a significant leap in global mobility, climbing four positions to rank 56th on the Henley Passport Index in the first half of 2025. The improvement comes as several key countries, including China and Russia, have recently granted visa exemptions to Omani citizens, enhancing the passport’s global standing.

According to official data compiled by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Omani passport holders can now travel visa-free to 88 countries, up from 86 in 2024 when Oman was ranked 60th globally.

The Henley Passport Index, powered by IATA’s travel data and maintained by analytics firm Timetric, ranks global passports based on the number of destinations their holders can access without obtaining a visa in advance.

China and Russia Lead Visa-Free Momentum

In a significant diplomatic move in May, China announced visa-free entry for nationals of Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain, effective from the following month. This policy shift marked the expansion of China’s visa-free access to cover all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, following similar arrangements previously made with the UAE and Qatar in 2018.

Additionally, Oman signed a mutual visa exemption agreement with Russia, allowing short-term visits without the need for a visa. The agreement officially came into effect on July 18, 2025.

Omani citizens now enjoy visa-free access to destinations such as:

• Albania, Bahamas, Belarus, Brunei, Egypt, Georgia, Iran, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Türkiye, Ukraine, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, among others.

They can also obtain visa on arrival in countries like:

• Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Maldives, Indonesia, Nepal, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, and Yemen.

For other destinations, Omanis are required to secure an e-visa, including for:

• India, Cuba, South Africa, Nigeria, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe.

Meanwhile, countries such as Kenya, Sri Lanka, Seychelles, St. Kitts and Nevis, and the United Kingdom require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entry.
